THE CAMPERVAN GUIDEBOOKOWNERSHIP / EXPLORE

From buying your first van to improving an existing conversion, find practical guidance on ownership, maintenance, upgrades and keeping the vehicle fit for the journey.

Buying a campervan

Understand layouts, payload, service history, corrosion, running costs and conversion quality before committing to a purchase.

Conversions and upgrades

Think carefully about insulation, ventilation, electrical systems, heating, plumbing, storage and safe installation.

Looking after your van

Routine checks, servicing, tyres, brakes and suitable insurance all contribute to reliable and enjoyable campervan travel.

Before buying: look beyond the photographs

A well-presented conversion can hide a tired base vehicle. Check the service record, signs of water ingress and corrosion, the condition of the tyres and brakes, and whether the available payload suits the people and equipment you intend to carry. Inspect the furniture, fastenings and service installations with the same care as the vehicle itself.

  • Weight and layout: make sure beds, seats, storage and payload genuinely suit how you travel.
  • Conversion quality: inspect electrical protection, ventilation, gas work and any applicable certification.
  • Ownership costs: account for tyres, servicing, insurance, fuel, parking and ongoing maintenance.
  • Test the equipment: ask to see the leisure electrical system, fridge, heating, water and roof or pop-top operating correctly.

The systems that make a campervan work

Electrical systems deserve particular attention. Battery capacity, charging arrangements, cable sizing and protective devices all need to suit the loads being supplied. Heating and cooking arrangements must also be considered alongside fresh-air provision and safe installation. Specialist work should be completed and checked by competent people where appropriate.
